Login to OPAY: Everything You Should Know
OPay is one of Nigeria's most prominent fintech companies, and its login process is nearly identical to other mobile money apps, with just a few security differences setting it apart. In this article, I'll walk you through every step of signing in to OPay, and I'll also cover what to do if your registered phone number is no longer available.
For personal account users, OPay provide interface access via its mobile app that is available for download on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, depending on the phone you're using. If you're a business account owner, you can access the business dashboard via the business app or the web interface.
Either way, you will need your registered phone number and unique password to access your account. But in circumstances where you no longer have access to your phone number, you can simply use the store biometrics, like facial ID or fingerprint, to sign it.
However, if you're signing in to a new device, I mean device you haven't choose as your preferred device on the OPay account, then you will need more than password and biometric sign-in. You will need to complete BVN-level facial verification. A live video recording of your face will be required where you will be asked to perform some lively activities such as blinking and nuding to complete the process.
Once the live video capturing is completed, OPay will verify it against your BVN database to check if they correspond. If the facial verification passes, you will be signed in to your account.
This level of verification has secured many OPay accounts in recent years as no one can simply guess your password right and carryout an unathorized transfer of your funds. There are many more account-wide security levels on the OPay system but we're only focusing on the login aspect in this article.
How to Login to OPAY with Phone Number
Login to OPAY using your phone number simply requires you to input your registered phone number and your unique password. If you've been signing in on that device before, you will not even required to input your password; you will just login simply by using your biometrics that's already stored on the phone.
This works in the sense that your phone sensors map key data points and turn them into a secure, encrypted mathematical code or template. This data is saved inside an isolated hardware chip on your device. So, when you set your login password on OPay and turned ON biometric login in the app, the password will be encrypted into the isolated hardware chip on your device. When you use your fingerprint or face to log into OPay, the app will obtain the encrypted code and de-code it, giving you instant and automatic access to the account.
This is why you would be required to register a new device, entering your password, and performing BVN-level verification check to if you tried to login on a new device. At this stage, simply using phone number and password will not give you access to the account.
Login to OPAY without Number
It's possible you don't login to OPAY account using your registered phone number. If you're a business owner, you can use either phone number, business (branch code), or email address to login to your OPay Business Account. For personal account users, there are two methods: phone number and email address.
If you don't have access to your registered phone number, you can simply login to the account by using the number or email, your password, and BVN-level verification check; OTP code for login is not required. So, you don't have to worry about lost SIM card.
Meanwhile, you can change your phone number on the OPay app. If you change your phone number, your account number and OTP code retrieval will be changed to the new phone number. The number will also be used as your new login phone number.
You can also change the phone number linked to your OPay account on the login page. This is useful if you lost your SIM and can't access your account. All you need to do is open the OPay app, and click “Switch Account”. Then tap the “Lost Your Mobile Number, Change Now,” as shown in the image below:
Another thing you should know is that if you've borrowed money through Easimoni, whether via the OPay app or the Easimoni app, you must repay all outstanding loans before you can change your phone number on OPay. Also, the new number must not have been previously used on OPay. But it's totally fine if you cannot change the number for any reason, you can still log into your account without needing an OTP.
