How to Update your Email Address on the Aadhaar App

Aadhaar

In my previous article about Aadhaar, I explained how to check the SIM linked to your Aadhaar account and report fraud if you see any suspicious activity on the account. You can check it out here if you're interested in knowing the exact SIM number connected to your account. But this guide is far beyond that; I will wake you through how to change your email address on the Aadhaar app using your phone and for free.

If you've been paying to update anything on your Aadhaar account, you no longer need to do that because most of the data can now be updated by individual users of the mobile app on their phones for free until December 31, 2026. However, it's important to note that your registered phone number is the essential requirement needed to access Aadhaar online services for the modification of any data on the platform.

According to the information I obtained from the “Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI),” Aadhaar details that can be updated includes:

  • Your Name
  • Your Address
  • Your Date of Birth (DoB), Age, and Gender
  • Your Mobile Number and Email Address
  • Your Relationship Status
  • Your Finger Prints,
  • Your Iris,
  • and Your Facial Photograph.

Thankfully, email address—which is the primary purpose of this article—is included as part of the demographic information that can be changed on the government portal. These information can be updated in two different ways, which are by visiting the Aadhaar Enrolment Centre and through online updates. The online update process is what we explore for the sake of this tutorial. It'll save you time, money, and stress.

How to Change Email Address on Aadhaar App

Changing your Aadhaar email address via phone is the new method that eliminated the need to visit an enrollment centre. This service comes free for now until December 31, 2026. Linking a working email strengthens security and makes accessing Aadhaar services more efficient. Follow these steps to successfully change your email address:

1. Login to Aadhaar App

First of all, you need to login to your Aadhaar account via the dedicated mobile app. If you don't have the app installed on your phone, you can download it on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store if you're an Android or iPhone user. If you have the Aadhaar app already installed on your phone, ensure that you are having the latest version of the app.

To login to your account via the app, you will need to enter your 12-digits Aadhaar number and receive OTP code via the registered phone number linked to the account. Once the OTP is confirmed, you will be logged in successfully. Alternatively, you can also login to your account with a six-digit PIN or biometric authentication (FaceID/fingerprint)—that can only work if you've enabled it on the app.

2. Change the Email

Once you have successfully login your account on the Aadhaar app, just navigate to “Services” section and tap on “Email ADD/Update.” You will see a notification that tells you that you can update your email address for free now until December 31, 2026. Enter the new email address in the designated box and an OTP code will be sent to the email to confirm it's yours. Once you confirm the OTP, you will be proceeded to verification.

3. Verify the Change

To authenticate the change, you will need to complete face verification. The login OTP sent to the linked phone and the one sent to the email address are for ownership confirmation. The face authentication requires here is for the purpose of confirming that you are actually the one performing this change.

You will need to give the Aadhaar app permission to access your camera. Once permission is granted, you will be required to complete a liveness video by recording yourself performing the actions instructed by the system. Once the video verification is complete, the system will match your video with the information in its database to confirm your identity.

Next, review your details and tap the “submit” button. After that, you will be given an “Update Request Number” (URN), save it or write it somewhere. The URN is the unique tracking code that you will be using to track the status of your change. Continue tracking it until the change is processed. It usually takes 2 to 3 hours for the update to reflect. Once the change reflects, you can then proceed to verify the new email address.

4. Verify the new Email

Once your email address changed has been processed, you will need to verify it. To do that, visit the UIDAI official portal via “https://uidai.gov.in/,” scroll down the page and tap “Check Update Status.” On the next page, choose “Verify Email/Mobile Number”.

Next, enter your Aadhaar number, the new email address and complete the CAPTCHA shown on the screen. After that,  tap the request an OTP button and enter the code received in the new email inbox. Once the OTP code is confirmed, you will see a confirmation message that tells you that your email address has been successfully linked to the Aadhaar.

If the new email change has not been processed, you will get a notification saying email is not found on the account or similar message.

Another thing you should also understand is that if you cannot use the mobile app to change your biodata such email, phone number, name e.t.c., you can always visit any of the Aadhaar Seva Kendra but a service fee will apply. So, you should be ready for that and by the beginning of 2027, thr online update via the Aadhaar mobile app will no longer be free.
