MTN One TV is MTN Group's comprehensive video streaming platform that is entering a highly competitive and rapidly evolving Over-The-Top (OTT) market. Although, MTN plans to use the streaming service to expand digital entertainment and content access across Africa but it'll compete directly against both established global giants and deeply entrenched local players.
The launch of MTN One TV aligns with MTN's Ambition 2030 initiative of transitioning from a traditional telecommunications operator into a platform-led, AI-driven technology company. MTN said the streaming service will address the structural barriers that have historically limited streaming adoption on the continent.
The service will provide flexibility surrounding how customers watched content, payment infrastructure, data costs, and content relevance—with models that varied by market. It departs from the rigid, single-tier subscription models favored by global Western streaming platforms because of its utilization of a highly flexible operational model tailored to specific regional markets.
MTN One TV will combine local storytelling, live broadcast channels, international programming under a single brand, and market-specific viewing options. Consumers will have access to free-to-view content, advertising-funded video-on-demand (AVOD), transaction-based pay-as-you-watch options, and traditional monthly subscriptions.
According to MTN in a press released on their official website, customers can pay for content using airtime billing, MTN Mobile Money (MoMo), and other localized payment methods. The multiple payment options integration directly targets the continent's large unbanked population, removing a primary friction point for premium digital services.
MTN seeks to position itself as a central hub for African digital consumption. The Telecom is not only using the streaming service to target consumers, the platform's multi-tiered monetization strategy allows local broadcasters, creators, advertisers, independent filmmakers, and ecosystem partners in Africa to distribute content directly to a verified, continent-wide audience.
MTN One TV Competitive Landscape
MTN One TV is entering a highly competitive and rapidly evolving Over-The-Top (OTT) market. It will compete directly against both established global giants and deeply entrenched local players including Showmax, Netflix, Airtel TV, and Amazon Prime Video.
| Competitor | Market Strengths | Strategic Vulnerabilities |
|---|---|---|
| Showmax (MultiChoice) | Deep catalog of local African originals; live English Premier League football rights via Showmax Pro; strong continental brand equity. | Historically tied to more rigid subscription models; relies heavily on partnerships for mobile wallet integration. |
| Netflix | Massive global production budget; premium brand recognition; highly sophisticated recommendation algorithms. | Limited local live TV/sports channels; subscription pricing and payment methods are less accessible to mass-market consumers. |
| Amazon Prime Video | Bundled value for Amazon Prime subscribers in South Africa; global brand presence and strong library of international content. | Halted funding for new local African originals; operational downscaling limits direct regional competition. |
| Airtel TV | Backed by Airtel Africa's substantial subscriber network; free or low-cost data-bundled content for telecom users. | Smaller library of premium international content and exclusive high-budget originals compared to MultiChoice or Netflix. |
MTN is leveraging its massive subscriber base by anchoring the One TV platform within its existing connectivity and financial technology infrastructure. This integration serves as a powerful channel for distributing the digital entertainment across its African markets, and also serves as a competitive means of challenging these well-established video-on-demand operators.
“Entertainment is increasingly becoming an important gateway to digital participation," stated Selorm Adadevoh, MTN Group Chief Commercial, Strategy and Transformation Officer. "Through MTN One TV, we are leveraging the scale of our connectivity, fintech, and digital capabilities to make relevant content more accessible while creating new opportunities for creators, broadcasters, and advertisers.”
