Ministry of Finance and Coordinating Ministry of the Economy of Nigeria

The Federal Ministry of Finance is the Nigerian government body responsible for managing the finances of the Federal Government of Nigeria. These finances include planning and controlling revenue and expenditures, formulating fiscal policy, and coordinating public financial management.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, currently held by Chief Wale Edun, leads the ministry. The minister serves on the Federal Executive Council, and works directly with the President and key government agencies to guide Nigeria’s fiscal and economic policies.

The ministry’s core role is to ensure sound financial management for national development. The ministry is mandated to

  • Oversee federal revenue collection and spending;
  • Formulate and implement fiscal and financial policies;
  • Prepare and manage the federal budget;
  • Manage public debt and financial stability;
  • Promote transparency and accountability in public finance;
  • Mobilise domestic and external financial resources;
  • Coordinate with international financial institutions and development partners.
  • Draft and manage the federal budget;
  • Manage federal revenue, including taxes, tariffs, and other collections;
  • Advise government on fiscal policy, debt management, and public expenditure;
  • Engage with the Central Bank of Nigeria and other financial institutions on macroeconomic matters;
  • Supervise parastatals and agencies involved in finance and revenue (like the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Customs Service, and Securities and Exchange Commission).

The Ministry also functions as Nigeria’s chief financial representative to global institutions like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), and it leads negotiations on loans, grants, and economic programme support.

However, the Minister of Finance also holds the title Coordinating Minister of the Economy. This title was added under the current structure of the ministry to further expands its responsibilities beyond the finances management to align economic policy across government.

This allows the ministry to coordinate policies with other ministries (such as Trade, Industry, Agriculture, and Petroleum) to ensure cohesive economic planning and implementation.

The ministry was established at Nigeria’s independence in 1960 and has been central to the government’s economic management ever since. The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy is appointed by the President of Nigeria and reports directly to him.

The political leadership (the Minister and Minister of State) works alongside a Permanent Secretary, who is the senior career civil servant responsible for administrative and accounting oversight within the ministry.
