Windows 11 Update Makes Password Login Option Invisible

Windows 11 Password Login Option Sign-in Screen

Bug has just struck recent Microsoft updates on Windows 11. Users no longer see the password login icon on their screen whenever they try to sign in to their PC. Due to this, the company behind Windows, Microsoft, issued a warning to Windows 11 users that the "password login option" icon may disappear from their login screen page.

The company said this issue is caused by recent updates' bug and is currently working to bring a solution. Microsoft released this announcement after receiving feedback from many users of Windows 11's version 24H2 and 25H2 updates. These users recently noticed that the password-login icon on the lock screen has disappeared following the updates.

The issue appears for users who had multiple sign-in options configured (e.g. PIN, fingerprint, security key plus password). They noticed that after installing the August 2025 update KB5064081—or later updates—the “password” icon fails to render on the lock screen.

Importantly, the underlying password-login control is still there. It's just that the visual icon is missing. If you hover your mouse over the blank spot on the lock screen—where the password icon should be—the hidden (but clickable) button appears. Clicking it brings up the password entry box, allowing you to sign in as usual.

However, it's important to note that this issue is a “fixable inconvenience,” not a major bug, because Microsoft made it clear that it's a visual (UI) rendering issue, not a security or authentication failure. The company said it has already documented this as a “known issue” and is working toward a permanent fix in a future update.

What should I do? Next time your password icon is “missing” on the sign-in screen, just hover your mouse over the empty spot—where it should be—and try clicking on the empty spot, and the button will reappear. The button is just invisible, not gone. Another thing you should also do is keep your PC updated because Microsoft says it'll fix the visual bug in an upcoming update.

However, if you often rely on other sign-in methods, such as PIN, fingerprint, face ID, and security key, those continue to work without disruption, and you can sign in to your PC using any of the login methods.

Notably, the missing password login option is not the only bug the KB5064081 update has caused. In September, Microsoft resolved another bug that had been affecting DRM-protected videos, causing them to freeze, stop playing, or show a black screen when using Blu-ray, DVD, or digital TV applications.

In the same month, Microsoft also fixed several other issues caused by the same update. These include non-administrator users being unable to install applications due to sudden UAC prompts. In addition to that, lag and stuttering problems are also affecting NDI streaming tools on both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Back in August, following the Patch Tuesday rollout, Microsoft also had to address a separate problem. Security updates distributed via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) were failing with error code 0x80240069, prompting Microsoft to release urgent patches to fix broken reset and recovery functions in Windows 10 and Windows 10 Enterprise.
